FAQ of Stainless Steel Sheet

1. What is the SS sheet?

According to the definition in GB/T20878-2007, stainless steel is a kind of steel material with excellent corrosion resistance. Its chromium content is at least 10.5%, and the carbon content is not more than 1.2%.

2. How to calculate the weight of stainless steel plate?

The weight of stainless steel sheet can be calculated by the following formula:

Weight (kg)= Thickness (mm)* width (m)* length (m)* density (g/cm3)

For example, if the SS304 sheet is 16 gauge (1.6mm) in thickness, 950mm in width, and 2.2m in length, its weight is about 26.52 kg (1.6*0.95*2.2*7.93).

The stainless steel weight per square meter differs with the thickness and the steel grade. For example, the weight of 0.64mm (24GA) SS304/304L per square meter is about 5 kg. 3. What is the difference between Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled Stainless Steel?

Different stainless steel manufacturers in China will offer both hot rolled and cold rolled stainless steel. Below are more differences for your reference.

(1). Making Method
The former is made at high temperatures, while the latter is processed at average temperatures. It often decides the grade of the steel used for the manufacturing process.

(2). Surface Treatment
Cold rolled stainless steel coils with good surface quality, no oxidation scales, and various surface treatments available. After pickling, there are oxidation scales on hot rolled stainless steel coils, and the surface is grayish or dark brown. And the smoothness of cold rolled stainless coil is higher than that of hot-rolled coil.

(3). Mechanical Property
The mechanical property of hot-rolled stainless steel is much lower than that of cold-rolled stainless steel. The cold rolling possesses higher hardness.

(4). Price
Cold rolled SS coil has higher toughness and surface quality than hot rolled SS coil and higher price than hot rolled coil. But the price also depends on the quality of the product. 5. Will Stainless Steel Rust?

Stainless steel is a material that has strong corrosion resistance, which means it does not easily rust. It is formed by adding anti-corrosion elements such as nickel to form a very thin, firm, and stable chromium-rich oxide protective film, preventing continuous infiltration and oxidation. However, it will rust in certain conditions – when exposed to damaging chemicals, saline, grease, moisture, or heat for an extended period. In addition, the greater the nickel content, the greater the possibility of rusting.

6. How to reduce corrosion of stainless steel plates?

(1). Clean the stainless steel surface frequently to remove attachments and eliminate external factors that cause rust.

(2). Paint a layer of titanium a layer of fingerprint-free oil or anticorrosive paintings on the surface to prevent the stainless steel from rusting.

(3). Use suitable materials according to the use environment. For example, SS304 has excellent anti-corrosion ability in dry and clean atmospheres. While SS316 is more suitable for seaside areas, which can resist seawater corrosion.

(4). By stainless steel products from reputable manufacturers, which can meet the corresponding national standards.

7. How To Store Stainless Steel Products?

(1). It should be stored in a dry, ventilated, and non-polluting place.
(2). Avoid exposure to outdoors or confined space with high temperature or wetting, as it is prone to oxidation under long-term humidity and high temperature.
(3). Avoid storing the coils with corrosive substances such as acids and alkalis, as it will accelerate the corrosion of stainless coil.
(4). The recommended storage temperature is 20℃±10, and the recommended humidity is 60%±10.
